Jacarepaguá Airport: The R$ 120 Million Upgrade and What It Means for Barra
Few people remember that Barra has an airport. Located between Avenida Ayrton Senna and the lagoons, Jacarepaguá Airport serves business aviation, air taxis, helicopters and flights supporting tourism and the oil industry. In 2026 it completed the biggest upgrade in its recent history.

What was done
- Runway and apron: pavement repairs, new lighting and vertical signage
- Safety: runway end safety areas (RESA) and a new precision approach path indicator (PAPI)
- Terminal: new façade, refurbished interiors, a boulevard and upgraded equipment
- Instrument operations: more safety and predictability, including in bad weather
Why it matters for investors
The airport alone does not change the property market, but it reinforces three of Barra's strengths:
- Business: executives and oil and gas companies use the airport, which supports demand for mid-term rentals in the area
- Events: during major events such as Rock in Rio, business jets and helicopters land closer to the Olympic Park
- Relief for Santos Dumont: the airport absorbs part of the city's business aviation
The airport is a supporting driver, not the main one. Buyers in Barra who are targeting rentals to executives and event visitors benefit from more modern air infrastructure nearby. But don't expect regular commercial flights: the focus remains business aviation.
